As Australia marks Cybersecurity Awareness Month, the government has introduced the Cyber Security Bill 2024, part of a broader Cyber Security Legislative Package 2024. The law is the country’s first standalone cybersecurity legislation and aims to address a growing range of cybersecurity threats, from ransomware attacks to the security of smart devices, and will impact businesses and households across Australia.

Key Features & Challenges of the Cyber Security Bill 2024
- Minimum Standards for Smart Devices
IoT devices, such as smart doorbells and smartwatches, must adhere to mandatory security standards, including unique passwords and regular updates. These measures help reduce vulnerabilities and protect consumers.
It’s worth noting that compliance with these standards may increase costs for businesses, particularly smaller ones, potentially limiting their capacity to innovate in the space.
- Mandatory Ransomware Reporting
Under the bill, organisations must report ransomware incidents to the Department of Home Affairs via an online portal managed by the Australian Cyber Security Centre within 72 hours. This requirement covers incidents that impact the organisation, demands made by an extorting entity, and any ransomware payments. This obligation is aimed at improving the government’s visibility and response to ransomware attacks, which are often underreported.
While this improves national security, businesses, especially small to mid size entities, may find the reporting timeframe challenging, particularly when already managing the fallout from a cyberattack. Additionally, failure to comply can result in a civil penalty of AU$19,800, further adding pressure on organisations to act swiftly and accurately.
- Cyber Incident Review Board
A new board will be established to investigate major cyberattacks, identify weaknesses, and recommend improvements. This approach helps businesses learn from past incidents, strengthening defences against future threats.
However, adapting to board recommendations may require additional resources or internal restructuring, which could be a financial and operational burden for some Aussie businesses.
- Government Support for Critical Infrastructure
The bill introduces streamlined government assistance during cyberattacks on critical infrastructure, aiming to ensure faster response times and limit the damage caused.
While this support can be crucial in mitigating threats, businesses might have concerns about government overreach, privacy issues, or becoming overly reliant on external assistance for their cybersecurity needs.
- Whole-of-Economy Approach
The bill takes a unified approach to improving cybersecurity across all sectors, positioning Australia to become a global leader in cybersecurity by 2030. This collaborative effort raises standards and fosters stronger defences nationwide.
However, smaller businesses may struggle to meet these heightened standards, particularly those with fewer resources or expertise, potentially leading to uneven levels of compliance and security across industries.
Impact on Businesses, Critical Infrastructure, and Consumers
FOR BUSINESSES
-
Mandatory Reporting: Companies must report ransomware or cyber extortion incidents, especially if a ransom is paid. This helps law enforcement provide tailored support, particularly for small businesses, which are more vulnerable to attacks.
-
Improved Response: The government will collect and share anonymized data on cyber incidents quarterly, allowing businesses to stay informed about evolving threats and adjust their cybersecurity measures accordingly.
-
Cyber Resilience: By understanding ransomware trends and methods, businesses can protect their data, respond more effectively, and recover faster from cyber incidents, helping Australia become a harder target for cybercriminals.
For Critical Infrastructure
-
Enhanced Security Protocols: Organizations managing critical infrastructure are required to implement comprehensive cybersecurity frameworks, including advanced threat detection and incident response protocols. Regular security assessments will help ensure these systems are resilient against cyber threats.
-
Mandatory Risk Assessments: The law mandates that these entities conduct thorough and regular risk assessments to identify and mitigate vulnerabilities. This proactive approach strengthens defenses and enhances preparedness for potential cyber incidents.
-
Collaboration with Government Agencies: The legislation fosters stronger partnerships between private sector organizations and government bodies, facilitating the sharing of intelligence and resources. This collaboration enhances the overall security posture of critical services.
-
Immediate Incident Response Support: In the event of a cyberattack, organizations will have access to enhanced government support for rapid response and recovery. This capability is vital for minimizing damage and restoring essential services quickly, protecting public welfare.
-
Ongoing Training and Awareness: The bill encourages continuous training programs for employees in critical sectors to ensure they are equipped to recognize and respond to cybersecurity threats. This cultivates a culture of vigilance and preparedness within organizations.
For Consumers:
-
Stronger Data Protection: Enhanced cybersecurity measures by businesses will lead to better protection of personal information, minimizing data breaches and privacy risks.
-
Increased Awareness: Public education campaigns based on government findings will help consumers improve their own cyber hygiene, reducing the chances of falling victim to online threats.
-
Long-Term Benefits: Fewer cyber incidents will lead to less financial loss and stronger trust in the digital economy, benefiting the broader Australian community.
Looking Ahead
While the new legislation places additional responsibilities on businesses, it also offers opportunities to improve resilience and reduce long-term risks. We encourage businesses to review their cybersecurity strategies to align with the new requirements.
We’re committed to guiding you through these changes, ensuring your business stays compliant, protected, and prepared. We’re thrilled to present the September 2024 edition of Brilliant Bios, featuring our Marketing Manager, Paul Hart! Dive in and enjoy his story! 🏆
With a career that started in the early days of the Internet and a knack for transforming ideas into impactful strategies, Paul’s story is one of passion, innovation, and relentless curiosity.Dive in and discover what makes Paul an integral part of the Murdoch Webster team!

Can you tell us a bit about your background and your journey to Murdoch Webster?
Q: What’s your favourite office snack, and how does it fuel your cybersecurity success?
Coffee and jerky—not necessarily together. Being awake and fueled helps me stay productive.
Q: What’s the most memorable team outing or event you’ve had at Murdoch Webster?
Hosting a movie night for 70+ customers on a chilly winter’s evening was fantastic! Our Pretty in Pink BBQ was also unforgettable—a sea of pink feather boas, wigs, and costumes all worn by our great partners and the MW team.
Q: How do you think cybersecurity experts will work together with artificial intelligence in the future to tackle cyber threats?
AI agents and tools are here. Ethically deploying them and maximising their effectiveness (without going overboard) is the tricky part. In the marketing domain, we use AI to get the ‘first page’ prepped and planned for most campaigns. Each Brilliant Bio image leans in on some of the fun that can be had with AI!
Q: Imagine a day in the life of a Murdoch Webster employee 10 years from now. How do you envision it?
It’s a little worrying to think about how cyber threats will become increasingly nuanced and smart with AI over the next 10 years. It’ll be exciting to see how we stay leaders in the field. On a practical level for marketing, we’ll evolve with these changes. Hopefully (as an older guy these days) we won’t be too heavily reliant on the next TikTok. I’m not sure Chris is keen on tapping into the latest (future) dance video meme.
Q: What’s the go-to playlist or song that gets your team in the zone for tackling cybersecurity challenges?
As a ’90s teen, let’s roll with Rage Against The Machine to get the head boppin’ and brain fizzing a little. 🎸💥

This month, we’re delighted to spotlight our Senior Consultant, Yogesh Mahalingam. From fieldwork to advanced network engineering, we’re diving into the journey and passion that drive our skilled team members.
Enjoy!
Introduction
Hello! My name is Yogesh Mahalingam, and I recently moved to Melbourne to join Murdoch Webster. I have a deep passion for technology, clean energy, and space. After earning my Bachelor’s in Information Technology, I embarked on my career journey 10 years ago.
I started as a Field Network Engineer, travelling across India on a motorbike to set up networking for over 200 small sub-post offices. This hands-on experience and extensive travel taught me resilience and adaptability. My dedication and skills led me to become a Lead Tech Engineer, managing operations for enterprise customers in India and the US.
Driven by my curiosity and love for technology, I gained expertise in NGFW, SASE, SD-WAN, and other network solutions. I have had the privilege to design, implement, and operate networks for prestigious clients such as Mercedes-Benz, H&M, major supply chain customers, the Reserve Bank of India, Wipro, and more.
I pride myself on being a quick learner and have a knack for teaching high-tech skills.

Can you tell us a bit about your background and your journey to Murdoch Webster?
I was born and raised in the southern part of India, where my early life was spent mostly with nature. I lived for at least 15 to 16 years without electricity, in a small hut house, and led a simple life.
Through hard work and focus, I got into university to get my Bachelor’s in Information Technology. By the time I was about to finish, I already knew that IT networking was going to be my passion.
My journey started with a curiosity about how Wi-Fi operates, which eventually led me to take significant steps in making IT networking my career.
At my previous job, Marcus and I worked on an SD-WAN/SASE project for a customer in Australia. That’s when I got a chance to work with Marcus, who referred me to Chris, and I eventually joined Murdoch Webster whilst still living in India.
What were some significant life experiences that led you to where you are now?
I always wanted to move away from home for adventure. I made many life decisions as I kept moving to new places. To get into university, I had to move to another city from home.
That’s when my travel started. Although I had the opportunity to move to other parts of the globe, I decided to bring my family to Melbourne, and I am grateful for this new adventure.

This month, we’re thrilled to spotlight our Service Delivery Manager, Craig Myers. From sales to technical engineering, we’re exploring all corners of our skilled team and offering a glimpse behind the scenes into what drives their passion and expertise.
Enjoy! 🎣
Chris and I worked together at a previous company, sharing similar work ethics and ideas about delivering solutions to clients. Three years after Chris started MWTG, he offered me a job. Recognising the opportunity to continue our shared vision, I joined the team and have been a dedicated member ever since.
What were some significant life experiences that led you to where you are now?
The early realisation that quality of life isn’t about how much you earn was truly eye-opening. It showed me the satisfaction of cooking delicious meals for myself and how diving into various hobbies can endlessly enrich one’s life. Fishing, in particular, is always a treat, offering both relaxation and a bit of thrill. This insight has warmly deepened my appreciation for life’s simpler joys.

Life at Murdoch Webster
Q: What’s your favourite office snack, and how does it fuel your cybersecurity success?

Hard to describe in a public forum.
Q: How do you think cybersecurity experts will work together with artificial intelligence in the future to tackle cyber threats?
A person will always need to be in the loop. It’s the same as other “ground breaking” technologies of our time. The capabilities of technology are unbelievable, but they only realise their full potential with skilled, thoughtful, people driving them.
Q: Imagine a day in the life of a Murdoch Webster employee 10 years from now. How do you envision it?
No construction noise out the front of the office for starters. Hopefully it will be the same. Utilising the skills and technology of the time to deliver outstanding outcomes to our clients.

We’re excited to share that our Managing Director, Chris Mearns, recently attended Druva’s first Partner Advisory Board meeting in Nashville, Tennessee. Chris was the only attendee from Australia at this significant event held on 23 April 2024, which brought together leading professionals to discuss the future of data security.
This gathering was a fantastic opportunity for Chris to engage with top industry leaders and contribute his insights on integrating advanced cybersecurity solutions. His participation underscores our commitment to staying at the forefront of industry innovation and building strong international partnerships.
In Chris’s own words, “Attending Druva’s Partner Advisory Board meeting was an incredibly valuable experience. Collaborating with industry peers from around the world provided exceptional insights and reinforced our commitment to leading in data security. It also showcased the latest advancements that we can bring to our clients.”

With a renewed focus on Data Security, Druva has enhanced its product capabilities to address the growing demands of the cybersecurity landscape. The platform now offers robust data protection, swift cyber incident response and recovery, streamlined eDiscovery and compliance, and intelligent, AI-driven autonomous protection. This evolution aligns seamlessly with our commitment to providing top-tier security solutions to our clients.
We also gained valuable insights into market trends, such as the projected $24 billion growth in the BDR and Security market by 2024 and the shift towards digital-first, subscription-based models. As Australian businesses continue to deploy workloads and data across their cloud providers, grappling with these trends help us tailor our offerings to better meet the needs of our customers.
We’re also thrilled to hint at some exciting developments coming soon from Murdoch Webster. Stay tuned as we continue to innovate and enhance our offerings to better serve Australian businesses, particularly those utilising Microsoft cloud workloads
We’re pleased to announce that Palo Alto Networks have continued to be ‘up and to the right’ in 2024’s Gartner Magic Quadrant for Security Service Edge.
Security Service Edge offers a primarily cloud-based solution for controlling access to applications and websites from users and edge devices. It integrates security features like adaptive access, malware protection, data security, and threat prevention, enhancing efficiency for a hybrid workforce. This integrated approach across various traffic types ensures a seamless user experience while maintaining consistent security.
Recognised as a leader in the Service Security Edge market for the second consecutive year, the report explores current industry trends and demonstrates how Palo Alto Networks consistently addresses these challenges with top-tier solutions.

Palo Alto Networks
Palo Alto Networks is a Leader in this Magic Quadrant. It is a large company, headquartered in Santa Clara, California, U.S. It offers a range of security products, in addition to SSE. Its SSE offering is Prisma Access, which can be managed from a single, unified console that can also manage on-premises firewalls.
Palo Alto Networks’ operations are geographically diversified. It has clients of all sizes from a wide range of industries. Palo Alto Networks has acquired Talon Cyber Security, a provider of an enterprise browser, which it plans to integrate with Prisma Access.
Strengths
-
Overall viability: Palo Alto Networks is financially secure. It continues to invest in, and develop, its SSE offering into a competitive offering to support the transition of its sizable customer base to cloud-delivered security services.
-
Product offering: Palo Alto Networks recently launched a new console (Strata Cloud Manager) that unifies the management of both on-premises firewalls and SSE and removes the requirement to select a management approach upon deployment.
-
Innovation: Palo Alto Networks continues to invest in engineering talent for its SSE business unit. It is also investing in its AI copilot and strong industry partnerships.
Cautions
-
Sales execution: Gartner clients report that Palo Alto Networks’ licensing model is complex and difficult to understand, with inflexible and inflated pricing during sales motions.
-
Market responsiveness: Our assessment is that Palo Alto Networks’ product roadmap for RBI is insufficiently differentiated to have a significant impact on the SSE market.
-
Sales strategy: Feedback from Gartner clients indicates that Palo Alto Networks’ Prisma Access still appeals primarily to the company’s existing customers..
A cornerstone partner within our cybersecurity practice, we enjoy a deep understanding of their technologies and deploy high-performance security platforms that adapt to each client’s evolving security posture.
You can download the document directly from Palo Alto Network’s website should you wish to review the full report.
Welcome back to Brilliant Bio! This April we’re excited to spotlight one of the latest additions to our team, Account Executive Sheikh Dean.
From sales to tech, we’re covering all areas of our talented team and providing a behind-the-scenes peek into what gets them up in the morning. Sheikh is a real character, and as we venture into the new year with fresh faces and stories, his is one you’re sure to enjoy! 👍
Introduction
A technologist at heart, I love helping customers to design, build and deploy cutting edge solutions that improve their in-house technology and drive commercial efficiencies. Helping my customers redesign their strategic technology initiatives drives me to do what I do best every day.
I started my technology career at Dell Technologies almost 10 years ago. In my role as Account Manager, I covered multiple industries and verticals between mid market & enterprise looking after some of the largest organisations in Australia along with a few global customers. I spent another year at VMware looking after the Energy and utilities segment in Victoria, with a handful of global FSI customers in VMware’s corporate segment.

What were some significant life experiences that led you to where you are now?
From a young age I was always into technology, computers mainly – tinkering, breaking and ultimately fixing things (that were usually working perfectly fine before I touched them!) were high on my list of things to do. I spent a lot of time around family members that worked in high tech and between constantly being around technologists and my passion for technology, ultimately it became the obvious choice in career.

Hey, Chris here! 👋
With another great (calendar) year on the books at Murdoch Webster I’m super proud of the work we’ve delivered for our amazing customers, in close partnership with some really fantastic vendor mates.
Before ‘24 arrives, take 5 with me to reflect on the great moments of ‘23, the wonderful conversations and bright experiences had with the people in and around Murdoch Webster. Read on!
The sun shone warm and bright in January. We kicked off the year with some large NetSec projects and enjoyed our 3rd year at The Aussie Open, a great day together with our customers and partners.
Kicking things off in Feb, Leanne and I partnered up with Louay at Spartans Sec to welcome our education customers along to our Security Round Table lunch. As always, time together provides the space for practical conversations on Cybersecurity best practices, always topical and productive.
As Summer faded in March the Comedy Festival rolled into Melbourne! We took a moment with our friends from Dell Technologies to invite some great customers out for some laughs together all thanks to a fellow Scotsman (Larry Dean). It was a great night and welcoming +1s to events has become a mainstay for us.

Leanne had us roadtrippin’ across Victoria in April with our Regional Roadshows kicking into gear. First stop on the tour was Geelong with great support from Ken and Candice from Rapid7 and KnowBe4. We also spent time venturing out to Mildura and Ballarat in the later part of 2023. It’s always great to spend time with some customers talking security, family and a little of everything between. Maybe 2024 is the year we head Gippsland way!

In May, we Mother’s Day! With Leanne’s boundless energy, we welcomed the amazing #LadiesofIT community together for brunch spending time making some new industry connections and learning great tips on how to #DressforSuccess with Esmeralda from Ooshka. Leanne brings it every year here and I look forward to supporting the LoIT efforts in 2024!
AI entered the chat mid-year for some fun across our Brilliant Bios, a series of relaxed, get-to-know-us Q&A chats that cover work and life with our growing team. Whilst we spend plenty of time working hard together, every Bio shares a little something unexpected and fun, take a moment to check them out!

On a cold Winter’s Thursday night, we hosted our biggest event ever. Together with Candice and the team at KnowBe4, we hosted ‘a Date Night on Us’ at the cinemas checking out the latest Indiana Jones flick. Raining, cold and miserable outside, our amazing customers (with +1s welcomed again) turned out in force to learn a little about the dangers of phishing whilst enjoying a choc-top, popcorn and drinks. The evening truly underscored the trust and strength of the relationships we’ve built with our customers.
This year we reinvigorated our lunch-time Hear from an Expert webinars. A technically leaning affair, we spent time with some great Experts. In August, Lucas and Caleb from Palo Alto Networks delivered a fantastic update. In November, Heath from ThousandEyes took the reins for a real conversation on operational visibility for business critical SaaS apps. Join us for lunch in 2024 as we expand the series!
With Breast Cancer Awareness Month in October and Leanne actively soldiering through work and life, alongside her own personal fight, we started our massive Breast Cancer Network Australia (BCNA) fundraising efforts. Over September and October, we welcomed close customers and industry friends to the Field of Women at the ‘G, ran our biggest BCNA fundraiser with the unstoppable #LadiesofIT community and capped off our efforts with a #PrettyinPink BBQ, a perfect day at our offices with industry mates.
It was a truly massive effort lead by Leanne with huge contributions from the team, we raised just shy of $10k for BCNA. A massive THANK YOU to all that supported our efforts!
The Royal Children’s Hospital does such amazingly important work and when Cisco were looking for a Platinum Sponsor to support this cause, we signed on early. Side benefit, we got to pick up the clubs for a great day golfing together. Thanks Paul Suhr and Terrence George, an amazing day!

As November and December rumbled into reality, like many in IT, we chose to spend some time with our customers working to close off projects whilst taking some time to celebrate the year’s hard work together.
Our security and infrastructure practices have continued to grow in personnel and depth of expertise this year, I’m so proud of the team’s hard work and can-do effort! We remain focused on delivering transformative IT outcomes that help you and your teams do great work, learn more, sell more and simply be more productive – always with cyber safety in mind.

If you’ve made it this far I’d like to thank you one more time for being a great customer, partner or friend of the team at Murdoch Webster.
Wishing you a very Merry Christmas and a wonderful New Years with those that are most important to you. See you soon in 2024!
Cheers,
Chris Mearns
